Belle and Sebastian Bach/Top Ten Things About Northeast Philly

1. Hipsters listen to metal.

2. Smoking is allowed at every bar. In the city or the state, I'm not sure which, the law has something to do with how much food you serve. Every bar in NeP either adjusted their kitchen hours accordingly, or they just don't put ashtrays out. By not putting ashtrays out, they reason, they are not condoning smoking. Therefore, if you decide to smoke and a cop comes in, the bartenders can simply say "We didn't know they were smoking. We're a non-smoking bar. See the no-ashtrays?" That works, I guess. The Princeton's been shut down a few times, but that was probably due to underage drinking, drugs, or the neighbors complaining of the overwhelming stench of Lindsey's piss that's accumulated on the floor of the back room over the years.

3. The answer to "Pat's or Geno's?" is "Steve's".

4. No one from there ever leaves, and why should they? Northeast Philly has its own airport, its own fireworks on 4th of July, and Holy Family college, for the ladies to become nurses or teachers; something to hold the family up once hubby retires at 35 to be a full-time drunk.

5. I don't hate Northeast Philly. Does it sound like I do? I actually think it has a lot more culture now than people realize. It USED to be white and boring, but when I left, my neighborhood was all Brazilian. I love what they did to the nightlife. And their food is good too.

6. I also, honest to God, prefer Steve's Steaks to anything else. It's what I'm used to. I like Northeast Philly steaks over South Philly steaks, and my friend Cuauhtemoc once said he likes California pizza over New York pizza. Now that boul is DRAWN! But yeah. Ya like what ya know.
